Ramsey's origins date back to the building of the abbey in 969. The abbey and surrounding land through the years has been associated with the likes of the Cromwell family and whilst the original abbey can now be seen as ruins, the manor house that was built was converted in 1938 to a school and is still used as such to date.
Known as the capital of the Huntingdonshire Fens, Ramsey is a market town providing many modern leisure facilities. The sports centre offers a range of facilities such as swimming pool, multi-purpose sports hall and fitness suite. Also available locally to the public is a 9 hole golf course. The town also has a cinema and a variety of restaurants and eating places.
The town has its own primary and secondary schools, with many of the villages surrounding Ramsey also having primary schools which feed into the Ailwyn Community School.
Ramsey town centre has a number of shops including two supermarkets and a number of smaller traditional shops providing most items needed on a daily basis whilst not being far from towns and cities such as Huntingdon, Peterborough and Cambridge for the larger stores and shopping centres.
Ramsey is situated 10 miles from the A1 and is 11 miles from Huntingdon Railway Station for the conveneince of the main London to Edinburgh line, enabling train travellers to be in the heart of London within the hour.
